"A Country of Our Own"

Sir William Wallace

Scottish patriot and warrior Sir William Wallace was put to death today in 1305. Wallace became a hero to the Scots after leading resistance to the rule of English King Edward I (Edward Longshanks).
After a stunning victory at the battle of Stirling Bridge, Wallace's fortunes sank and he suffered defeat at Falkirk a year later. Although evading capture at that time, Wallace was eventually taken prisoner (by a Scottish noble loyal to Edward) and handed over to the English.

He was taken to London and was executed at the site of what is now Smithfield Market.
