Today In History...1854

David Dunbar Buick was born on this date in 1854 in Arbroath, Scotland. He started his company Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company in 1899 to develop engines but quickly envisioned selling entire cars, he is the inventor of the overhead valve system that is still in use today because of the enhanced performance and power that is a result of putting the escape valves on top of the cylinder instead of on the sides which all other car companies were using at the time ( 1902 ). He was forced to sell his share in 1904 to James Whiting and William C. Durant and the conglomerate that resulted under the new administration was called General Motors.
